It was back then in 2006, when one girl by the name Ashley joined the Prestigious Kenyatta University for her bachelor’s degree. Ashley was a Mama's girl she had all she ever wished for, coming from a middle income family life was like a walk in the park, and she literally lived her life to the fullest.
Days turned weeks, Ashley had already made dozens of friends from all walks of life, ranging from affluent to poor. She was comfortable adjusting to college life and by the look of things she was already curving her own niché, she even contested for freshmen representative position which she unluckily lost but atleast she had already established herself as the next upcoming celebrity in campus. Boys started drooling, everyone wanting a piece of her (Male student leaders and young lecturers included). Her campus life started being every girls dream life.
Ashley met Dan, a young energetic boy who was a charmer and a darling to many. They both agreed to date each other, Dan being a third year student knew he could manipulate and at the same time be in control of Ashley's life, they even agreed to move in together. For the first few weeks they were both inseparable, love or rather infatuation was at its peak. Time to break for the semester come everyone had to go home; it was time for the young couple to say goodbye not knowing it was their last happy moments together.
The break lasting merely for two weeks so it was time to resume a new semester, Ashley was very excited to be back since she had already made the campus her own imaginary kingdom with a king (Dan) she barely knew anything about. King Dan come back to campus one week after the opening day, the jovial mood had ceased abruptly Ashley even wondered if it was the same Dan but to her surprise yes it was the same king Dan. He has become cold towards her and doesn't care anymore; at times he would go for few days without coming back or even make a simple call to explain his whereabouts.
Suspicion started creeping in, Ashley trying her best to find out the reasons behind their new state of affairs. Dan started coming early in the morning for change of clothes and even started transferring some to a "friends place" as he said whenever he was asked, Ashley got suspicious and started asking his friends what could be the problem with Dan, friend advised her that she should give him some time maybe there is something bothering him and he doesn't want to share with anyone. Days passed by yet no changes, Ashley stopped caring and decided that she will not keep worrying over him.
On a weekend, Sunday to be specific Ashley was in a company of female friends strolling about the campus streets, little did she know that it was the time to discover what has been the cause of Dan's sudden change of heart. Head on "collision" they met Dan in a company of a certain female "friend", and Ashley knowing Dan is his King she run to him giving him a passionate hug, as she was telling him how she has missed his passionate ways the lady in his company shouted at her asking her how can she miss his husband!
Hell broke loose; on hearing that Ashley almost fainted the thought of having lived with someone supposed husband almost killed her. The lady happened to be a second year student, who was in long break the previous semester; she has been living with Dan for the past two years when they were in session. After the incident, Ashley took off with tear rolling down her cheeks wishing she had never met Dan the King she had hoped for.
As she was going after a harsh breakup, she encounters a handsome man who offered her his handkerchief to wipe off her tears. The handsome man happened to be a young lecturer of sociology department, the young gentleman by the name Sam inquired what had happened to her and offered to take her to her hostel. On reaching the hostel Sam excused himself to attend some departmental meeting but promised to be back in the evening. Ashley wallowed in anguish and cursed every minute she spent with Dan.
In the evening, there was a knock in the door Ashley contemplated answering and not answering but the knocking persisted, so she had to answer contrary to her own will. Sam was standing at the door and requested to be invited inside, Ashley let him in. A series of questions followed from what had happened to what transpired in their earlier encounter, she just told him it was not a big deal "just a love gone bad" and they both laughed it off. Sam jokingly suggested that it is only a fool who can break such a beautiful person’s heart.
It was now late in the evening and Sam had to leave, he asked for her contacts and promised to keep in touch. Days passes by, weeks also and Sam had not called nor texted and then all over sudden new number calls "Hallo?" caller said, "hallo to you" Ashley answered, "This is Sam" the caller sounded,"oooh my! Long time? What happened, you never called?" Ashley inquired, "Can we meet today? Java house in tao, 1800hours" caller suggested, "Sure, I'll let you know when I'm there" Ashley replied. Caller disconnected the call, Ashley smiled and become so tensed, and she then smiled and laughed it off.
It was 1800hours, Ashley had not reached her destination she was caught up in traffic, so she decided to text "On my way, traffic's so hectic" and sent, a reply come in a fraction of a second "Okay, am waiting! See you soon". 1900hours Ashley arrives, on entering to the restaurant she pulled her phone but on looking around someone waved from the corner table, she put her phone back and goes straight to the table, "welcome" Sam said as he pulls a chair for her, "Thanks!" Ashley replied. They called the waiter and made their order, then a lively conversation followed. After few hours all you could see was laugher and happiness in their faces, as time goes by they both felt comfortable in each other’s company.
Time to go home come by and they both left. Sam drove her to her hostel and wished her a good night, she did the same and Sam drove off. Ashley all smiley opened her door and jumped off to bed. In a short while a text was received from Sam "Enjoyed your company, hope I'll see you soon again" she replied "Enjoyed too, see you soon"
Several weeks later, Sam invited Ashley out to accompany him to some function at Carnivore. Ashley was hesitant at first but later agreed to accompany him, this made Sam very happy and prompted him to tell his friends how he has ‘Angukiad” some fine chick in town. The main function was happening on a Friday night so Sam came to pick Ashley at her hostel at around 1900hours, everything being set they both dove away but first they passed Sam place for dinner before driving off to Carnivore. At Carnivore, Sam tried hitting on her and even assured her that he was in a soul mate searching spree, Ashley felt flirted but insisted that there was no way a handsome lecturer of his caliber would be single, all you could notice was some passionate sensation lingering between the two newest lovebirds to be.
It was now getting into the midnight; Sam was busy engaging his bottles as Ashley engages her ears to the love songs played by the likes of Sauti Soul, Otile and other powerhouse musicians. Sam came up with an idea that Ashley should sleep over his house since the following day was a weekend, additionally Sam wanted to spend some more time with her. She was hesitant in the beginning but later on agreed, Sam assured her that she was in the safest hands.
Half an hour past two in the morning, they both drove off to Roysambu where Sam resides, on reaching the house they both jumped off to bed and slept off. Early in the morning they both consented to a love making spree without protection, they then slept some more until it was already midday. Ashley woke up tired and went straight to shower and later bade goodbye to her new found lover.
She kept texting on her way but to her surprise there were no replies, she even called and the call went unanswered. She console herself saying “Maybe he went back to sleep, or maybe hangover is weighing him down”.1600hours she texted again but no reply again, she opted to call yet no one answered she then call for the second time and to her dismay Sam's phone had been switched off, she felt like crying but kept consoling herself that just maybe he’s still fast asleep and phone battery had run low.
The following day Ashley texted yet no reply, past midday a text was received from a new contact which reads “Sorry, I have a wife. Had the best night”, tears started drooling over her cheeks. Heartbroken for the second time in a span of less than two months, she decided to nurse her wounds with a mind of not dating anytime soon.
Few weeks passed by Ashley has increased in weight, she’s vomiting and has completely lost her appetite. Friends advised her to take a pregnancy test or rather visit a medical doctor to be examined, she agreed to visit Campus doctor who examined her and told her she was three weeks pregnant. It was a new dawn for her, harsh reality filed with regrets of just a single night that has altered her destiny completely. Thought run through her mind “What will I tell Mama? How will I face her?” her friend calm her down and assured her that everything will be alright.
Few months later, it was now clear that Ashley was pregnant her belly had already bulged and there was nothing she could do about it. She even delayed going home early for her long break, until her mom literally begged her to go home. Ashley being the only girl born to her parents, she was considered the Princess of the house she was even treated like a queen that she is.
On reaching home, her mother knew at once what was hindering her lovely daughter from coming home, her mom being a modern kind of a mother she understood her and even motivated her; this in a way uplifted her spirit to the next level. Her mom even promised to take care of her and if need be, she will nurse her child until she's done with her studies only with a condition that she amend her ways. Ashley thanked her mom and assured her that she had learnt her lesson.
It was now time to resume her session, two months due to her presupposed delivery time. Ashley was eager to resume her studies; she went back to school and settled quite fine. Two months down the line it was time for her to deliver, her mom come and took her to the hospital where she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl, joy filled her heart. Tears of joy rolled down her mother’s cheeks as it was her first grandchild, few days later she was discharged and her mother took her home. She nursed her baby for three weeks and went back to campus, and promised her mom to be home every weekend to help out in nursing her bundle of joy.
Three years later, Ashley graduated with a first class honors and won herself a Masters degree sponsorship in the same institution. She courageously took up the challenge and pursued her studies with zeal of a lioness; she later graduated and secured a job in a leading Non governmental Organization. Today Ashley is a Chief executive officer of her own company that deals with girl child welfare.
